Thurgood Marshall

LDF Founder and 1st Director-Counsel; Supreme Court Justice

Thurgood Marshall was a prominent civil rights lawyer and the first Black Supreme Court Justice. He played a significant role in LDF as the founder and first Director-Counsel, serving from 1940 until 1961. Under his leadership, LDF became a crucial organization in the fight against racial discrimination, particularly in the realm of education and segregation.

Marshall was instrumental in many landmark cases, most notably Brown v. Board of Education (1954), which led to the desegregation of public schools in the United States. His work with LDF focused on challenging laws and practices that upheld systemic racism and inequality, laying the foundation for many civil rights advancements in the country.
